There are many cities in the world, but few have had as much meaning to their residents as Cerritos, California. It’s an interesting place, and one worth learning more about. The city of Cerritos is a suburb within the city of Los Angeles, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fairly significant place to call home. Situated just south of downtown LA and west of Long Beach, Cerritos is home to nearly 50,000 people who call it ‘home sweet home.’ Its history stretches back to 1887 when the first homesteaders arrived and began building new homes for themselves. With that being said we think you’ll enjoy reading about everything there is to know about this unique area in Southern California.

What is the history of Cerritos, California?

The history and founding of Cerritos can be traced back to 1887 when a group of homesteaders arrived in Southern California looking to purchase a piece of land to call their own. Charles Wilson, a surveyor, and real estate broker, was contracted to map out the land parcels with the hopes of merging 40 parcels into one larger parcel. He was the first to survey and surveyor of this area. As the days passed and the settlers explored the land, they realized that it wasn’t the best choice for a new home. The land was sandy and not very fertile. They were also plagued by mosquitos and other pests that were hard to avoid. Eventually, the settlers returned to the streets of Los Angeles, where they found other homesteaders who had the same idea as them. They decided to form a group and came up with the name of “Cerritos”. The word “Cerrito,” in Spanish, means “little hill,” which is perfect because Cerritos is made up of several little hills and valleys.

The three most important people in Cerrito’s history

This is difficult, but we’ll give it a try. The most important person in Cerrito’s history, in our opinion, is Charles Wilson. Wilson is the person who surveyed the land for the city of Cerritos. He is also the person who first surveyed and labeled the land parcels now known as neighborhoods in Cerritos. Without Wilson, there would have been no Cerritos. Next, we have John L. Satterfield, who was the first mayor of Cerritos. He served in this capacity from 1898 to 1901. Satterfield is often referred to as the “Father of Cerritos.” Finally, we have Richard “Dick” Caldwell, who served as the Chief of Police from 1947 until 2001. Caldwell is credited with both developing the police department and the community policing program. Next area over
